USAID Nepal Flood Recovery Program (USAID-NFRP)

Project Duration: May 2008 to March 2011

Areas of Assistance: Terai Region

USAID-NFRP Summary

Heavy monsoon rains in 2007 lasting for more than three weeks caused considerable damage and human suffering in rural communities of Nepal. Flooding and landslides affected 50 of the country's 75 districts and the lives of more than 600,000. Because of the severity of the floods, particularly in the Terai Region, USAID/Nepal contracted Fintrac to launch the Nepal Flood Recovery Program (USAID-NFRP) to support flood victims in six of the most flood-affected areas (Banke, Bardia, Kailali, Bara, Parsa, Rautahat) of the Mid/Far West region of the Terai.

Fintrac is working to rehabilitate and improve community infrastructure, provide income-generating activities through agriculture, improve community health through training in sanitation, hygiene and nutrition, and facilitate the participation of local community-based organizations in grassroots development.

In August 2008, floods in the Kanchanpur and Sunsari districts affected 250,000 more people. The Koshi river floods have left 47,000 persons displaced, 5,000 hectares of farmland damaged and 17 kilometers of East-West Highway along the Sunsari district destroyed. In December 2009, USAID/Nepal awarded Fintrac a 12 month extension to implement similar infrastructure and livelihoods and income-generating activities in these districts.
